Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information Unbot collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what rights you have over it. It applies to the Unbot mobile application and to unbotapp.com.
You can contact us at team@unbotapp.com.
Who can use Unbot
Unbot is available only to persons aged 18 years and over who hold a valid email address at a recognised university or college. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we become aware that an account holder is under 18, we close the account and delete the associated data.
Information we collect
- Your college email address. Provided by you at sign-up and used to verify that you are a student. It is stored against your account.
- Account information. Your display name or pseudonym, your college, and account settings.
- Content you create. Posts, comments, poll responses, direct messages, images and any other content you submit.
- Information you give the Bot. Your responses during conversational intake, and preferences derived from them, used to suggest meetups.
- Device and notification data. A push notification token for each device on which you install the app.
- Usage and technical data. Information about how you interact with the app, and technical diagnostics such as crash reports and performance data.
We do not collect your precise location, your contacts, your payment information, or any special category data.
How we use it
- To verify that you are a student at the college you select, and to authenticate you when you sign in.
- To operate the app — showing your campus feed, delivering direct messages, and running meetups.
- To suggest meetups and groups that may suit you, based on preferences you have given the Bot.
- To screen content for material that breaches our rules, and to investigate reports and enforce our terms.
- To send notifications about activity relevant to you.
- To fix problems, improve the app, and respond to your questions.
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not share it with data brokers or advertising networks.
Your anonymity
Other users see the display name you choose, not your email address or real name. Your college is not told that you use Unbot. However, your email address is held on our systems and can be linked to your account internally. Anonymity on Unbot is anonymity from other users, not from us.
Service providers
We use a small number of third-party providers to run Unbot. Each processes data only on our instructions and for the purposes below.
- Google Firebase and Google Cloud Platform — authentication, database, file storage, push notifications and hosting. Data is stored in Google’s Mumbai region (asia-south1).
- SendGrid — delivery of one-time verification codes to your college email address.
- OpenAI — automated screening of text and images against our content rules.
- Algolia — search within the app.
Some of these providers process data outside India. Where that happens, we rely on the contractual protections offered by the provider.
How long we keep it
We keep your account information and content for as long as your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete your personal data within 30 days, other than records we are required to retain by law or that are needed to resolve a safety or legal matter. Content you posted in shared spaces may remain visible in de-identified form where removing it would break the context of others’ conversations.
Your rights
You may ask us to give you a copy of the personal data we hold about you, correct data that is inaccurate, or delete your account and associated data. You may also withdraw consent to processing, though this will usually mean closing your account.
To delete your account, see unbotapp.com/delete-account. For any other request, email team@unbotapp.com from your registered college email address.
Security
Access to production systems is restricted and protected by two-factor authentication. Credentials are held in a secrets manager rather than in application code. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our infrastructure providers. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. Where changes are material, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
Grievances
If you have a complaint about how we handle your data, or about content on Unbot, contact our Grievance Officer at team@unbotapp.com. We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and aim to resolve them within 15 days, in line with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
